Crash-survivor Simon: 'I’m so proud to be part of the #walk1000miles community'

After a motorway crash alerted Simon Basford something was seriously wrong with his health, he decided to change his life forever – and discover walking is superpower.

‘I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes back in 2010. In early 2011 I was driving on the M6 near Penrith when I suddenly passed out and crashed into the central reservation. I went to the doctors and a blood test revealed I had a massively high sugar content level.

'A friend suggested I go to a weight loss programme, and in the first week of replacing horrible food with healthy food, drinking water and exercising, I lost 10.5 lbs. Over a year I lost seven stone. I was 24 stone, I’m now 17, and I’ve continued with my exercise plan, getting myself back to health and going out of my comfort zone to do marathon walks every year for charity.

‘Joining #walk1000miles has enabled me to achieve what I thought I could never achieve – 1000 miles in 2019, and 2000 miles in 2020 and 2021. It has improved my fitness, my mental health and my diabetes – I recently had a diabetes eye check and found my eyes have improved too. I’ve met other group members over the years and feel extremely proud to be part of a massive global community on Facebook.

‘When I look back at my pictures, I'm proud of the amount of work and effort I’ve put myself through. I’ve thought of giving up many times, but I’m here to share my outstanding achievements. I always say, when it comes to walking, every little helps – have enjoyable experiences and walk happy.’

Simon’s epic, ever-growing medal haul!
