In every issue of Country Walking there are 27 cut-out-and-go route cards at the back of the magazine. Each and every one is researched, walked, written and photographed by an avid walker. If you have ever wanted to share a great route with us and wondered how to go about it, you’ve come to the right place.
We’re always looking for potential new routes contributors who are passionate and knowledgeable about walking and the outdoors. If you can write clearly, concisely and colourfully, and take good photos too, we want to hear from you. You don’t have to be a trail-ticking, peak-bagging superwalker. But you must have an eye for detail and a knack for research. Map reading proficiency and walk planning know-how are essential.
The great thing about Country Walking is that we can publish such a wide variety of walks. We can have a walk up Snowdon on one page and a flat seaside walk on the next. The majority of our routes are circular walks, though we do publish linear routes as long as there are good transport links between the start and finish. As a guideline, we try and keep most of our routes between 5 and 12 miles in length.
If you’d like to pitch a route, please complete the contact form below:
· Let us know about any writing or walk leading experience you might have and where you walk – your home turf or regular stomping grounds further afield.
· Describe the walk you’d like to see published as a route card in Country Walking in no more than 150 words (we may ask for and outline map later). What makes it a good walk? Please check our routes index first (we try not to cover the same ground and repeat routes published within the last 4/5 years).
We’re happy to provide more information about writing routes for Country Walking (including our fees and freelance contributor guidelines) upon enquiry. Before we can commission a route, you’ll need to sign Bauer Media’s freelance contributor agreement.
